Hide and Seek

Hide and seek is a great childhood game. One (or more) persons hide while another person seeks for them. The game can go on for hours. This is now my life.

J has recently started taking toys or random objects and hiding them. Now, you may be thinking, how hard can it be to find something a one year old hides. To that I answer, You don't know J.

I have found objects in the dryer, under the deck, behind the toilet, at the bottom of hampers and laundry baskets, under the couch, in the garbage can, in kitchen drawers and cabinets. If you catch him in the act of hiding something, he'll smile at you and then hand over the object. Probably all the while thinking, "Damn you, vile woman!" a la Stewie on Family Guy.

It's been 3 weeks since I've seen the bus driver. I have searched the house high and low. I'm pretty much ready to sign off on her. I miss her hard, smiling, plastic face in the front of the bus singing "Move on back, Move on back". But alas, I will probably find her stuffed in the back of a closet with a smile still on her face.

First Birthday

A whole year. I can't believe one year (and one day) ago I gave birth to our baby boy. As we went throughout the day in preparation for J's birthday party, I silently relived the day of J's birth in my own mind. 10:15: Doctor T. broke my water. 11:00: Epidural. 12:15: J's heart rate dropped and the thought crossed everyone's mind that we may lose him. 1:15: J enters the world happy and healthy. Birthdays are for the person that was born on that day, but moms should also be celebrated. The nine months of pregnancy plus the hours (and sometimes days) of labor entitle any mom to give herself a pat on the back on the anniversary of their child's birth.

The past year has flown by so incredibly fast. It is amazing to me that J was born, like all babies, not being able to hold his head up, see less than a foot away and depend on his parents to provide for all his needs. And yet here we are, one year later, and J is walking (sometimes running!), saying some words and has his own personality. It is amazing how fast they grow and what they can learn in one year's time!

Being that I am a stay at home mom, I am proud to say that I have been there for all his firsts.
First time he rolled over. First time he smiled. First time he laughed. First steps. First words. I loved being there to cheer him on and jump and down when he learned something new. (Although I quickly realized that keeping your mouth shut and watching in awe is better. It tends to scare your kid and cause him to stop what he's doing when Mommy is whooping it up like a crazy person). Every day that goes by I love him more and I'm more proud of him than I was the day before.

I look forward to the year to come and seeing all that he will learn and accomplish. I am so happy to be a mom and enjoy all the happiness and wonderment motherhood entails. And I'm glad to be a mother to one pretty cool little kid.

Babies and Water

Why do babies like water so much? Somebody please explain it to me. Because if I knew, I could maybe formulate a solution to stop my one year old from throwing stuff in the toilet. The official count for today is as follows:

1 bottle
1 pacifier
1 pacifier clip
2 plastic balls
1 floating tub toy

I know what you're thinking, you judgemental person you. You're thinking, "Well, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know to close the lid or heck, even just close the whole bathroom door." Yeeaaahhh, I hear you. I did that after the first 2 times. The problem is, he's sneaky. I try to sneak down the hall to put towels away. He follows me silently, like a cougar hunting it's prey. I don't even know he's there until I hear the "plop" of some item being thrown into the toilet. While I'm yelling "You've got to be freakin' kidding me! Not again!", he throws the item in his other hand into the toilet. Then looks up and smiles at me. Maybe he'll grow up to be a marine biologist???

On another note, we went to the zoo again today (5th time in 5 months). But, today was different. Today, we got a behind the scenes tour. We got to touch/pet the Komodo dragon. That's right - the Komodo dragon. The big lizard at the beginning of the zoo that looks like he'll rip your skin to shreds if you get within eyesight of him. Apparently, the Komodo dragon at the Pittsburgh Zoo is the only one in the world that is docile enough to touch. So, I figure, they're either feeding it really well or sedating it. You decide.

Well, since this is my first post, I'll give the basics:

That sums it up in a nutshell.
